Salok Vaaraan Te Vadheek (Mehl 1), Salok 30 — The Lotus Waiting for Water
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
O lotus, your leaves were green, and your blossoms were the color of gold.
What pain has scorched you and turned your body black? Nanak says: my body is broken.
I know it: I have not found the water I belong with,
the water that, when I see it, makes my body bloom and glow four times brighter.
Cut off from the water it loves, the lotus withers; that water is what makes it bloom.
Pabar toon haree-aavlaa: O lotus, you were green, kanchan vann, golden. Kai dokh-rhai sarhi-ohi: what pain has burned you black? The lotus answers for the soul: mai tan bhang, my body is broken, because it has not found the water it belongs with.
That water is the One. Jit dithai tan parfurhai: just seeing it, the body blossoms, charhai chavgan vann, and its color grows four times deeper.
What is the water your own heart needs, the thing that makes you come alive when you finally get it?
