Salok Vaaraan Te Vadheek (Mehl 3), Salok 35 — The One Who Begs for the Fearless State

ਅਭੈ ਨਿਰੰਜਨ ਪਰਮ ਪਦੁ ਤਾ ਕਾ ਭੀਖਕੁ ਹੋਇ ॥
abhai niranjan param pad taa kaa bheekhak ho-ay.
One who begs for the supreme status of the Fearless and Immaculate Lord
ਤਿਸ ਕਾ ਭੋਜਨੁ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਪਾਏ ਕੋਇ ॥੨॥
tis kaa bhojan naankaa virlaa paa-ay ko-ay. ||2||
- how rare are those who have the opportunity, O Nanak, to give food to such a person. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Someone who begs for the highest state, the state of the Fearless and Spotless One —

Nanak says: rare is the person who gets the chance to give food to such a one.

Rare is the chance to feed someone who begs only for the Fearless One.
The deeper layer

Some people ask for only one thing: the peace of the One.

abhai niranjan param pad — the highest place, that of the One who is abhai, fearless, and niranjan, spotless. The seeker here is a bheekhak, a beggar. But this person begs for no money or fame. Their whole heart asks for the One.

Such seekers are rare. And rare, too, is the chance to feed one. Think of a friend running a race that matters to them. Handing them a water bottle feels like being part of their race.

A Question to Sit With

If you could ask for just one thing and get it, what would you want your one thing to be?
