Salok Vaaraan Te Vadheek (Mehl 3), Salok 49 — The Place Where Nothing Aches

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸਹਜੁ ਹੈ ਮਨੁ ਚੜਿਆ ਦਸਵੈ ਆਕਾਸਿ ॥
gurmukh antar sahj hai man charhi-aa dasvai aakaas.
Within the Gurmukh is intuitive peace and poise; his mind ascends to the Tenth Plane of the Akaashic Ethers.
ਤਿਥੈ ਊਂਘ ਨ ਭੁਖ ਹੈ ਹਰਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਸੁਖ ਵਾਸੁ ॥
tithai ooNgh na bhukh hai har amrit naam sukh vaas.
No one is sleepy or hungry there; they dwell in the peace of the Ambrosial Name of the Lord.
naanak dukh sukh vi-aapat nahee jithai aatam raam pargaas. ||16||
O Nanak, pain and pleasure do not afflict anyone, where the Light of the Lord, the Supreme Soul, illuminates. ||16||

In plain words

Within the Gurmukh — the one who turns to the Guru — there is calm, natural peace; the mind has risen to the Tenth Sky, the highest place within.

There, no one is sleepy or hungry; the sweet Naam of the One makes a home of peace.

Nanak says: where the light of the One, the Soul of all, shines, neither pain nor pleasure can take hold of anyone.

Where the light of the One shines within, pain and pleasure lose their grip.
The deeper layer

Where the light of the One shines inside, the mind rests in a peace that pain and pleasure cannot shake.

Gurmukh antar sahj hai: inside the one who turns to the Guru there is sahj, a calm, natural ease. Man charhi-aa dasvai aakaas: the mind climbs to the "tenth sky," a picture for the highest, quietest place within, beyond the busy senses.

There, oo(n)gh na bhukh: no drowsiness, no hunger. The sweet Naam, amrit naam, is a home of peace. In the last line, where aatam raam pargaas, the light of the One in the soul, shines out, neither pain nor pleasure can grab hold.

A Question to Sit With

When have you felt completely at ease, not performing, not craving, just at home in yourself?
