Salok Vaaraan Te Vadheek (Mehl 3), Salok 61 — the fire of wanting goes quiet

lakh cha-oraaseeh maydnee tisnaa jaltee karay pukaar.
The 8.4 million species of beings burn in desire and cry in pain.
ih moh maa-i-aa sabh pasri-aa naal chalai na antee vaar.
All this show of emotional attachment to Maya shall not go with you at that very last instant.
bin har saaNt na aavee kis aagai karee pukaar.
Without the Lord, peace and tranquility do not come; unto whom should we go and complain?
vadbhaagee satgur paa-i-aa boojhi-aa barahm bichaar.
By great good fortune, one meets the True Guru, and comes to understand the contemplation of God.
tisnaa agan sabh bujh ga-ee jan naanak har ur Dhaar. ||28||
The fire of desire is totally extinguished, O servant Nanak, enshrining the Lord within the heart. ||28||

In plain words

All the 8.4 million kinds of beings on earth burn with wanting and cry out.

All this spread-out attachment to Maya — the pull of the world — will not go along at the very last moment.

Without the One, peace does not come; to whom else could we cry out?

By great good fortune, one finds the True Guru and comes to understand the wisdom of the One.

Nanak says: when the One is held in the heart, the fire of wanting goes out completely.

A heart that is full has nothing left to grab for.
The deeper layer

The whole living world burns with wanting, and only the One held in the heart puts that fire out.

Lakh cha-oraaseeh maydnee: the "8.4 million" kinds of beings, the old count of every form of life. All of them burn with tisnaa, the fire of wanting, and cry out. The show of Maya does not go along antee vaar, at the last moment.

Bin har saa(n)t na aavee: without the One there is no peace. By good fortune a person meets the Guru, and tisnaa agan, the fire of wanting, goes out.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you wanted badly once that does not matter to you at all now?
