O Nanak, when someone dies in the Word of the Shabad, the mind is pleased and appeased. True is the reputation of those who are true. ||33||

In plain words

The Naam of the One is very great and high, the highest of the high.

No one can climb up to it, even if they long for it a hundred times.

Talk of self-control does not make anyone pure; everyone goes around wearing holy robes.

Those blessed by their karma go and climb the Guru's ladder.

The One comes to live inside whoever thinks deeply on the Guru's Word.

Nanak says: when someone dies in the Word, the mind is at peace; true is the name of those who are true.

The Naam is reached by the Guru's ladder, never by robes or talk.
The deeper layer

The Naam is higher than anyone can climb alone, yet the Guru's ladder brings it inside.

Har kaa naa-o at vad oochaa: the Naam is the highest of the high. Talk of discipline and wearing robes do not reach it. Gur kee pa-orhee: the Guru's ladder, the same word as pauri, a step. Karam paraapat ho-ee: it is reached by karam, a word that often means grace.

Whoever thinks deeply on the Guru's Word finds the One living inside. Dying in the Word, the ego quiets and the mind is at peace.

A Question to Sit With

When has trying harder not worked, and letting go finally did?
