Salok Vaaraan Te Vadheek (Mehl 1), Salok 8 — Taming the Restless Mind

baagh marai man maaree-ai jis satgur deekhi-aa ho-ay.
The tiger is killed, and the mind is killed, through the Teachings of the True Guru.
One who understands himself, meets with the Lord, and never dies again.
keecharh haath na bood-ee aykaa nadar nihaal.
One who sees the One and Only Lord with his eyes - his hands shall not get muddy and dirty.
naanak gurmukh ubray gur sarvar sachee paal. ||8||
O Nanak, the Gurmukhs are saved; the Guru has surrounded the ocean with the embankment of Truth. ||8||

In plain words

Whoever has the True Guru's teaching — the tiger dies, and the mind is tamed.

Whoever knows their own self meets the One, and never has to die again.

Whoever is blessed by the One's kind glance — their hand does not sink into the mud.

Nanak says: those who turn to the Guru are saved; the Guru is a lake with a bank of Truth all around.

The Guru's teaching tames the wild mind, and the One's glance keeps your hand out of the mud.
The deeper layer

Through the Guru's teaching the wild mind is tamed, and the One's glance keeps your hand out of the mud.

Baagh marai man maaree-ai: the tiger dies and the mind is tamed, jis satgur deekhi-aa ho-ay, for whoever has the True Guru's teaching. The tiger is the fierce, grabbing part of the mind. Aap pachhaanai har milai: whoever knows their own self meets the One, and bahurh na marnaa, is not caught in dying again.

Keecharh haath na bood-ee: the hand does not sink into the mud, for one who is aykaa nadar nihaal, made happy by the One's glance of grace. Gur sarvar sachee paal: the Guru is a lake with a bank of Truth, and inside it those who turn to the Guru are safe.

A Question to Sit With

What does your mind chase after when it will not settle down, and what helps it grow calm?
