Salok Vaaraan Te Vadheek (Mehl 3), Salok 91 — the drop found by meeting the Guru

The rainbird wanders all over the earth, soaring high through the skies.
satgur mili-ai jal paa-ee-ai chookai bhookh pi-aas.
But it obtains the drop of water, only when it meets the True Guru, and then, its hunger and thirst are relieved.
jee-o pind sabh tis kaa sabh kichh tis kai paas.
Soul and body and all belong to Him; everything is His.

He knows everything, without being told; unto whom should we offer our prayers?

O Nanak, the One Lord is prevading and permeating each and every heart; the Word of the Shabad brings illumination. ||58||

In plain words

O rainbird, you may wander over the whole earth and fly high into the sky.

But the water is found by meeting the True Guru; then hunger and thirst are over.

Soul and body all belong to the One; everything is in the One's keeping.

The One knows everything without being told — so to whom else should we pray?

Nanak says: the One lives in each and every heart; the Word lights it up.

The One who lives in every heart is found by meeting the Guru.
The deeper layer

Wandering everywhere does not end the thirst; meeting the True Guru does.

The rainbird flies over saglee dhartee, the whole earth, and up into the sky, and still the drop is found only satgur mili-ai, on meeting the True Guru. Jee-o pind sabh tis kaa: soul and body belong to the One.

Vin boli-aa sabh kichh jaandaa: the One knows everything without a word being said, so prayer becomes close and simple. Ghat ghat ayko vartadaa: the same One lives in every heart, and the Word, the Shabad, switches on the light so it can be seen.
