Sikhism·Dakhnee Onkaar·Shabad 111
Verse 20 of 55

I Chose Patience

khojat khojat amrit pee-aa.
Searching, searching, I drink in the Ambrosial Nectar.
khimaa gahee man satgur dee-aa.
I have adopted the way of tolerance, and given my mind to the True Guru.
kharaa kharaa aakhai sabh ko-ay.
Everyone calls himself true and genuine.
kharaa ratan jug chaaray ho-ay.
He alone is true, who obtains the jewel throughout the four ages.
khaat pee-ant moo-ay nahee jaani-aa.
Eating and drinking, one dies, but still does not know.
khin meh moo-ay jaa sabad pachhaani-aa.
He dies in an instant, when he realizes the Word of the Shabad.
asthir cheet maran man maani-aa.
His consciousness becomes permanently stable, and his mind accepts death.
gur kirpaa tay naam pachhaani-aa. ||19||
By Guru's Grace, he realizes the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||19||

In plain words

Searching and searching, at last I drank the sweetness.

I took up patience and gave my mind to the True Guru.

Everyone calls themselves genuine — but only the one who gains the jewel is genuine, in every age.

Busy eating and drinking, people die without ever knowing.

But the moment the Word is recognized, the grasping self dies away in an instant.

The mind grows steady and is at peace, even with dying.

By the Guru's grace, the Naam is known.

Patience is what steadies a searching heart.
The deeper layer

Khimaa — patience and forgiveness — is chosen and given to the teacher. Khin meh moo-ay jaa sabad pachhaani-aa — the ego lets go in an instant when the Word is recognized: the classic dying-while-living, framed positively as the grasping self releasing. Maran man maani-aa — the mind grows steady. Grace: gur kirpaa tay.

A Question to Sit With

Where in your life could a little more patience change things?
