Sikhism·Dakhnee Onkaar·Shabad 111
Verse 22 of 55

I Found It in My Own Home

ghar dar fir thaakee bahutayray.
Wandering to countless doorsteps and homes, I have grown weary.
jaat asaNkh ant nahee mayray.
My incarnations are countless, without limit.
kaytay maat pitaa sut Dhee-aa.
I have had so many mothers and fathers, sons and daughters.
kaytay gur chaylay fun hoo-aa.
I have had so many gurus and disciples.
kaachay gur tay mukat na hoo-aa.
Through a false guru, liberation is not found.
kaytee naar var ayk samaal.
There are so many brides of the One Husband Lord - consider this.
gurmukh maran jeevan parabh naal.
The Gurmukh dies, and lives with God.
dah dis dhoodh gharai meh paa-i-aa.
Searching in the ten directions, I found Him within my own home.
mayl bha-i-aa satguroo milaa-i-aa. ||21||
I have met Him; the True Guru has led me to meet Him. ||21||

In plain words

I wandered to more doorsteps than I can count, and grew so tired.

So many lives, so many mothers and fathers, sons and daughters, so many guides and students along the way.

A half-ready guru can't set you free.

There are countless brides, and one Beloved — think about that.

Whoever turns toward the Guru stays with the One, in dying and in living.

I searched in all ten directions — and found the One right inside my own home. The True Guru led me to the meeting.

After searching everywhere, you find it was inside your own home all along.
The deeper layer

The weariness of endless searching across many lifetimes. Kaachay gur tay mukat na hooaa — an unripe teacher cannot free you. Dah dis dhoodh gharai meh paa-i-aa — the classic reversal: sought in all ten directions, found within one's own home. Satguroo milaa-i-aa — the true guide unites us (grace).

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever searched far and wide for something that was close by?
