Verse 28 of 55

The Ocean Full of Jewels

ਞਿਆਨੋ ਬੋਲੈ ਆਪੇ ਬੂਝੈ ॥
nji-aano bolai aapay boojhai.
He speaks spiritual wisdom, and He Himself understands it.
ਆਪੇ ਸਮਝੈ ਆਪੇ ਸੂਝੈ ॥
aapay samjhai aapay soojhai.
He Himself knows it, and He Himself comprehends it.
ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਕਹਿਆ ਅੰਕਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥
gur kaa kahi-aa ank samaavai.
One who takes the Words of the Guru into his very fiber,
ਨਿਰਮਲ ਸੂਚੇ ਸਾਚੋ ਭਾਵੈ ॥
nirmal soochay saacho bhaavai.
is immaculate and holy, and is pleasing to the True Lord.
ਗੁਰੁ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਰਤਨੀ ਨਹੀ ਤੋਟ ॥
gur saagar ratnee nahee tot.
In the ocean of the Guru, there is no shortage of pearls.
ਲਾਲ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਸਾਚੁ ਅਖੋਟ ॥
laal padaarath saach akhot.
The treasure of jewels is truly inexhaustible.
ਗੁਰਿ ਕਹਿਆ ਸਾ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਵਹੁ ॥
gur kahi-aa saa kaar kamaavahu.
Do those deeds which the Guru has ordained.
ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਕਰਣੀ ਕਾਹੇ ਧਾਵਹੁ ॥
gur kee karnee kaahay Dhaavahu.
Why are you chasing after the Guru's actions?
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਸਾਚਿ ਸਮਾਵਹੁ ॥੨੭॥
naanak gurmat saach samaavahu. ||27||
O Nanak, through the Guru's Teachings, merge in the True Lord. ||27||

In plain words

The One speaks wisdom and understands its own speaking, knowing and seeing it all from within.

Take the Guru's words right into your bones, and you grow spotless and pure and dear to the True One.

The Guru is an ocean that never runs short of pearls — its jewels are endless.

So do the work the Guru gives you. Why run after copying the Guru's own deeds?

Nanak says: through the Guru's teaching, merge into the True One.

The teaching is an ocean of jewels that never runs out.
The deeper layer

The letter Nyaano. Gur saagar ratnee nahee tot — the Guru-ocean's pearls never run out. Ank samaavai — take the words into your very fiber. Gur kahi-aa saa kaar kamaavahu — do what the Guru asks — live the teaching rather than imitate the teacher.
