Verse 32 of 55

Light Enough to Cross

dhandholat dhoodhat ha-o firee dheh dheh pavan karaar.
Searching and seeking, I fell down and collapsed upon the bank of the river of life.
bhaaray dhahtay dheh pa-ay ha-ulay niksay paar.
Those who are heavy with sin sink down, but those who are light swim across.
amar ajaachee har milay tin kai ha-o bal jaa-o.
I am a sacrifice to those who meet the immortal and immeasurable Lord.
tin kee Dhoorh aghulee-ai sangat mayl milaa-o.
The dust of their feet brings emancipation; in their company, we are united in the Lord's Union.
man dee-aa gur aapnai paa-i-aa nirmal naa-o.
I gave my mind to my Guru, and received the Immaculate Name.
jin naam dee-aa tis sayvsaa tis balihaarai jaa-o.
I serve the One who gave me the Naam; I am a sacrifice to Him.
jo usaaray so dhaahsee tis bin avar na ko-ay.
He who builds, also demolishes; there is no other than Him.
By Guru's Grace, I contemplate Him, and then my body does not suffer in pain. ||31||

In plain words

Searching and seeking, I stumbled and sank at the crumbling riverbank.

Those heavy with wrongdoing sink; those who are light cross over.

I give myself to the ones who have met the deathless, measureless One.

The dust of their feet sets you free; in the Sangat, we are joined with the One.

I gave my mind to my Guru and received the spotless Naam.

I serve the One who gave me the Naam; I give myself to the One.

The One who builds also takes down — there is no other.

By the Guru's grace I keep the One in mind, and then my body feels no pain.

Those who travel light cross over — it's the weight we carry that pulls us down.
The deeper layer

The river of life: bhaaray... haulay — those weighed down sink, those who travel light cross over. The sangat here is the Sangat, people gathered together to remember the One; being among them lifts us. Jo usaaray so dhaahsee — the One both builds and dissolves (providence). Grace received: the mind given to the Guru, the pure Name received.

A Question to Sit With

What weight could you set down to travel a little lighter?
