Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
No one is mine — whose robe should I hold on to? No one ever was mine, and no one ever will be.
Coming and going, a person is ruined, sick with a mind torn in two.
People without the Naam fall down like walls of crumbling salt.
Without the Naam, how can anyone be set free? In the end they sink to the lowest depths.
With a handful of counted words we try to describe the True One, who cannot be counted.
Without understanding, a person is lost; without the Guru, there is no wisdom.
A soul cut off from the One is like a snapped string on a rabaab — it can't make its music.
Nanak says: God joins the separated back, waking their good fortune.
Naa ko mayraa — nothing here is "mine" to grasp; this is non-possessive love, not coldness. Dubidhaa — a mind torn in two, the disease. Rasaatal, the lowest depths, is where a life without the Naam ends up, pictured as a wall of salt crumbling away. The rabaab (a stringed instrument like a guitar) string: separation silences the music, and vichhurhi-aa maylai prabhoo — the One reunites the separated.
When have you felt reconnected after feeling cut off?
