vin satgur gun na jaapnee jichar sabad na karay beechaar. ||44||
Without the True Guru, he does not see God's Virtues; he does not chant the Glorious Virtues of God. ||44||
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
In plain words
Kings and nobles won't stay; neither will rich or poor.
When each one's turn comes, no one can stay on.
The road is hard and frightening; the lakes and mountains can't be crossed.
My body is full of faults, and I am wasting away with sorrow. Without goodness, how can I reach my home?
The good take their goodness with them and meet the One; how can I meet them with love?
If only I could be like them, chanting the One again and again in my heart.
A person is full of faults, and still goodness lives in them too.
Without the True Guru, that goodness isn't seen, as long as they don't think on the Word.
Even a heart full of faults has goodness living in it too.
The deeper layer
King and beggar alike move on. Avgunee bharpoor hai gun bhee vaseh naal — even the fault-filled heart has virtue within, and it comes into view through the True Guru and the Word. Tin hee jaisee thee rahaan — the longing to become like the good.
