Wonder-Struck

hayrat hayrat hay sakhee ho-ay rahee hairaan.
Seeing and perceiving, O my companions, I am wonder-struck and amazed.
ha-o ha-o kartee mai mu-ee sabad ravai man gi-aan.
My egotism, which proclaimed itself in possessiveness and self-conceit, is dead. My mind chants the Word of the Shabad, and attains spiritual wisdom.
haar dor kankan ghanay kar thaakee seegaar.
I am so tired of wearing all these necklaces, hair-ties and bracelets, and decorating myself.
mil pareetam sukh paa-i-aa sagal gunaa gal haar.
Meeting with my Beloved, I have found peace; now, I wear the necklace of total virtue.
naanak gurmukh paa-ee-ai har si-o pareet pi-aar.
O Nanak, the Gurmukh attains the Lord, with love and affection.
har bin kin sukh paa-i-aa daykhhu man beechaar.
Without the Lord, who has found peace? Reflect upon this in your mind, and see.
har parh-naa har bujh-naa har si-o rakhahu pi-aar.
Read about the Lord, understand the Lord, and enshrine love for the Lord.
har japee-ai har Dhi-aa-ee-ai har kaa naam aDhaar. ||51||
Chant the Lord's Name, and meditate on the Lord; hold tight to the Support of the Name of the Lord. ||51||

In plain words

Looking and looking, my friends, I am simply wonder-struck.

The "me, me, mine" in me has died away; my mind sings the Word and finds wisdom.

I grew so tired of necklaces and bracelets and endless dressing-up —

then I met my Beloved and found peace, and now I wear one necklace: the whole of goodness itself.

Nanak says: turned toward the Guru, you find the One, with love and closeness.

Who has ever found peace without the One? Think it over in your mind and see.

Read of the One, understand the One, keep your love for the One.

Chant the One, keep the One in mind, and hold on to the Naam as your support.

The finest necklace is goodness itself.
The deeper layer

Hairaan — wonder-struck; the awe of wahe. Hao hao... mai mu-ee — the "I, I" self has died away, the ego dissolved. The bride's outer ornaments are set aside for the inner "necklace of all virtue" (sagal gunaa gal haar) — adornment relocated inward. Wonder is the doorway.

A Question to Sit With

What fills you with wonder when you stop to look?
