Verse 53 of 55

Grace Revealed Within the Heart

laykh na mit-ee hay sakhee jo likhi-aa kartaar.
The inscription inscribed by the Creator Lord cannot be erased, O my companions.
aapay kaaran jin kee-aa kar kirpaa pag Dhaar.
He who created the universe, in His Mercy, installs His Feet within us.
kartay hath vadi-aa-ee-aa boojhhu gur beechaar.
Glorious greatness rests in the Hands of the Creator; reflect upon the Guru, and understand this.
likhi-aa fayr na sakee-ai ji-o bhaavee ti-o saar.
This inscription cannot be challenged. As it pleases You, You care for me.
nadar tayree sukh paa-i-aa naanak sabad veechaar.
By Your Glance of Grace, I have found peace; O Nanak, reflect upon the Shabad.
manmukh bhoolay pach mu-ay ubray gur beechaar.
The self-willed manmukhs are confused; they rot away and die. Only by reflecting upon the Guru can they be saved.
What can anyone say, about that Primal Lord, who cannot be seen?
balihaaree gur aapnay jin hirdai ditaa dikhaa-ay. ||52||
I am a sacrifice to my Guru, who has revealed Him to me, within my own heart. ||52||

In plain words

What the Maker writes into a life cannot be rubbed out, my friends.

Yet the One who made everything, in kindness, comes and rests its presence within us.

Greatness is in the Maker's hands — think on the Guru and understand this.

The writing can't be argued away; however it pleases You, You care for me.

By Your kind glance I found peace. Nanak says: think on the Word.

Those who follow only their own minds lose their way and waste away until they die; thinking on the Guru, they are lifted out.

What can be said of the One whom eyes can't see?

I give myself to my Guru, who showed me the One right inside my own heart.

The Guru shows you the One inside your own heart.
The deeper layer

Laykh na mit-ee — the writ of the Creator (destiny) is unerasable, yet met with grace: kar kirpaa pag dhaar, the divine presence planted within by mercy. Nadar tayree sukh paa-i-aa — peace by the Glance of grace. The manmukh, who follows only their own mind, wastes away; thinking on the Guru lifts a person out. The heart-revelation: hirdai ditaa dikhaa-ay — the Guru reveals the One within.

A Question to Sit With

Who has helped you see something that was inside you all along?
