Verse 10 of 55

When the Sun Comes Up Inside You

ugvai soor asur sanghaarai.
When the sun rises, the demons are slain;
oocha-o daykh sabad beechaarai.
the mortal looks upwards, and contemplates the Shabad.
oopar aad ant tihu lo-ay.
The Lord is beyond the beginning and the end, beyond the three worlds.
aapay karai kathai sunai so-ay.
He Himself acts, speaks and listens.
oh biDhaataa man tan day-ay.
He is the Architect of Destiny; He blesses us with mind and body.
oh biDhaataa man mukh so-ay.
That Architect of Destiny is in my mind and mouth.
parabh jagjeevan avar na ko-ay.
God is the Life of the world; there is no other at all.
naanak naam ratay pat ho-ay. ||9||
O Nanak, imbued with the Naam, the Name of the Lord, one is honored. ||9||

In plain words

When the sun rises inside you, the dark things scatter.

You lift your eyes and turn toward the true Word.

The One is there before every beginning and after every ending, past all the worlds — acting, speaking, listening, all at once.

It shapes what comes to be, and gives you your very mind and body.

That Maker of all lives in my thoughts and on my lips.

It is the Life of the whole world — there is no other. Nanak says: colored by the Naam, a person walks in honor.

When light rises inside you, the shadows simply lose their grip.
The deeper layer

Ugvai soor asur sanghaarai — when the inner sun rises, the asuras, the dark forces, scatter; this is kept inward, the shadows of the mind losing their grip. Bidhaataa — the architect who gives us mind and body. Naam ratay — dyed in the Name — walks in honor.

A Question to Sit With

What helps the light rise in you on a hard morning?
