People would travel for months to bathe at a holy river or temple, believing it would wash away everything wrong they had ever done. But if there's no real change in your heart and actions — what exactly got washed away? Going through the motions on the outside doesn't clean what needs cleaning on the inside.
Look at the people around you. The ones who truly understand something — you can see it in how they live. Understanding without living it doesn't go very far.
Your own mind holds more treasure than any ruby, jewel, or diamond. You don't have to go anywhere to find it. You just need to genuinely hear even one true teaching. Really take it in. Let it change something in you.
There is One source for every living being. May I always remember this.
Real cleaning happens inside. A trip to a holy river is worth it when the heart is changing too.
In Guru Nanak's time, pilgrimage — travelling to a holy place to bathe and pray — was one of the biggest things a person could do. Guru Nanak himself travelled more than almost anyone. He visited Hindu temples, Muslim shrines and Buddhist monasteries. So he speaks from experience, not from the outside.
His point is simple. The outer journey matters when it matches an inner one. Go to a sacred place open and ready to be moved, and something can happen. Go expecting the place itself to fix you, with nothing changing inside, and you come home the same person.
There is a gift for everyone here. A long pilgrimage cost money and time that most people did not have. Guru Nanak says the treasure is not waiting at the end of that road. The poorest person, the one who could never make the trip, has the same rubies and diamonds inside their mind as anyone else. No one has more of it than anyone else.
Mat vich ratan javaahar maanik — inside the mind are gems, jewels and rubies. It is like searching the whole town for a treasure that is sitting in a box under your own bed. Your mind, just as it is, wherever you are, is already full. The key is to hear even one true teaching from the Guru, and really take it in. Then you start looking inward instead of outward.
Have you ever worked really hard for something — studied for a test, practiced a skill — only to find that the thing you most needed was already inside you, waiting for you to notice it?
