Verse 36 of 72

Love Is Both the Path and the Coming Home

ਲਲਾ ਐਸੇ ਲਿਵ ਮਨੁ ਲਾਵੈ ॥
lalaa aisay liv man laavai.
LALLA: Embrace such love for the Lord in your mind,
ਅਨਤ ਨ ਜਾਇ ਪਰਮ ਸਚੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
anat na jaa-ay param sach paavai.
that you shall not have to go to any other; you shall attain the supreme truth.
ਅਰੁ ਜਉ ਤਹਾ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਵੈ ॥
ar ja-o tahaa paraym liv laavai.
And if you embrace love and affection for Him there,
ਤਉ ਅਲਹ ਲਹੈ ਲਹਿ ਚਰਨ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥੩੬॥
ta-o alah lahai leh charan samaavai. ||36||
then you shall obtain the Lord; obtaining Him, you shall be absorbed in His Feet. ||36||

In plain words

**L** — let such deep love for the One fill your mind that you no longer need to go searching anywhere else. When your heart is full of that love, you have already arrived at the supreme truth.

And if you pour your love and tenderness into the One right where you are, then you find what you were seeking — you find the Beloved. And finding, you are drawn in completely, settling at the feet of the One like coming home to rest. Love is the whole path and the whole destination.

Fill your heart with love for the One and you need search nowhere else — for love is both the whole path and the coming-home.
The deeper layer

Love is the path to the One, and love is also where you arrive.

This verse belongs to the letter Lalla. Lalaa aisay liv man laavai — let the mind fill with such liv. Liv is loving focus, the heart's steady attention. Anat na jaa-ay param sach paavai — then you need go nowhere else, and you find the highest sach, the truest reality.

Then Kabir does something beautiful. Ta-o alah lahai — then you find Allah, the One, named with the Muslim word. The rest of the poem uses Hindu words of devotion. Kabir weaves the two together without a seam, with full respect for both. He grew up in a Muslim family of Julahas, or weavers, though the old stories of his birth differ. For Kabir, the Beloved is the same One under every name. That quiet, bold idea sits at the center of his poems.

Leh charan samaavai — finding the One, you merge at the Feet. It is like a child running home and resting at last in a parent's arms. The way there is not a trick or a ritual. It is love. And love is also the arrival.

A Question to Sit With

When your heart is really full of love for something or someone, do you notice how it stops you needing to look anywhere else for happiness?
