The One Fills High and Low Equally

ਤੇਰਸਿ ਤੇਰਹ ਅਗਮ ਬਖਾਣਿ ॥
tayras tayrah agam bakhaan.
On the thirteenth day of the lunar cycle, the thirteen holy books proclaim
ਅਰਧ ਉਰਧ ਬਿਚਿ ਸਮ ਪਹਿਚਾਣਿ ॥
araDh uraDh bich sam pehchaan.
that you must recognize the Lord in the nether regions of the underworld as well as the heavens.
ਨੀਚ ਊਚ ਨਹੀ ਮਾਨ ਅਮਾਨ ॥
neech ooch nahee maan amaan.
There is no high or low, no honor or dishonor.
ਬਿਆਪਿਕ ਰਾਮ ਸਗਲ ਸਾਮਾਨ ॥੧੪॥
bi-aapik raam sagal saamaan. ||14||
The Lord is pervading and permeating all. ||14||

In plain words

On the thirteenth day, remember that the wisest, holiest words all proclaim one thing: recognize the One everywhere.

Look for it below and above, in the deepest places and the highest — the same One fills them all equally.

There is no high or low, no honored or unimportant. That measuring falls away entirely. The One is spread evenly through absolutely everything, leaving nothing and no one out.

The One fills everything equally — high and low, honored and overlooked — so the whole business of ranking people simply falls away.
The deeper layer

Day thirteen, tayras (“thirteenth”): tayrah agam bakhaan — the sacred texts proclaim. aradh uradh bich sam pehchaan — recognize the One equally (sam) in the aradh (lower) and uradh (higher) regions. The great leveling line: neech ooch nahee maan amaan — there is no neech (low) or ooch (high), no maan (honor) or amaan (dishonor). bi-aapik raam sagal saamaan — the One pervades (bi-aapik) all things equally (saamaan). This is Kabir’s signature equality-teaching folded into a lunar day: since the One fills everything evenly, no person or place ranks above another.

A Question to Sit With

If the same One lives equally in everyone, how should that change the way we treat people?
