I am a mere insect, a worm. O True Guru, I seek Your Sanctuary. Please be merciful, and bless me with the Light of the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||1||

In plain words

O Guru — O True Being — I am coming to you. I am small. I am a worm, a tiny creature. I have no claim to anything.

I seek your sanctuary. Please — be merciful — and give me the light of the Name.

Admitting you are small and asking for the light — that is the only request that needs to be made.
The deeper layer

Guru Ram Das (the Fourth Guru) begins from radical smallness. Not false modesty — genuine acknowledgment that the self is not the source. "I am a mere insect, a worm" is not self-deprecation designed to flatter the divine into compliance. It is an honest recognition: without the Name — without connection to the oneness — the self is disoriented, small, easily lost.

The request is precise: not wealth, not power, not even peace. Just the light of the Naam. The Name is not a label for God. It is the living recognition of the oneness — the inner light that comes when you stop being separate from what you are part of.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever felt small in a way that was honest rather than scary? What did it feel like to admit you needed help?
