Those who are faithless — the cynics and the closed-off — they do not know the taste of the oneness. They have never let themselves find out.
The thorn of ego is embedded deep in them. And the more they walk away, the deeper it pierces. The more it hurts. Until finally, time claims them.
The "shaaktas" (those who reject the Guru's path, the faithless cynics) are described with compassion, not contempt. The thorn of egotism (haumai) does not punish from outside — it hurts more the harder you push against it. The cynicism that keeps you from the taste of the oneness is itself the source of deepening pain.
This is not a threat. It is a description of what actually happens. The self that refuses to bow, that insists on its separateness, that keeps the oneness at arm's length — it experiences more pain, not because it is punished, but because separation is painful and the self is adding to its own separation.
