Raag Aasaa
Commentary

Raag Aasaa, Mehl 5 (Guru Arjan)

You are my Friend and Companion — so why should my soul be afraid? With every breath I never forget You; I have come to Your shelter as Your child, and the Guru is the giver of peace.

The Arc

Pauri 0: with the One as Friend and Companion, why should the soul be afraid? The Pause (Pauri 1): the One is support and hope, remembered with every breath and morsel. Pauri 2: protect me — I have come to Your sanctuary from the ocean of fire; I am Your child.

Key Vocabulary

  • fearlessness from companionship: no situation faced alone (ang-sang, Nirbhau)
  • the Name in every breath: continuous remembrance (cf. B00C716)
  • "I am Your child": the tender trust of a child for its parent
  • the Guru, giver of peace: refuge from the ocean of fire

Themes and Cross-Connections

Fearlessness from the One's companionship is ang-sang and Nirbhau (cf. B00C741, B00C746). "Every breath and morsel" restates the continuous Naam of B00C716. "I am Your child" is one of Aasaa's tenderest images of trust — refuge sought as a child seeks a parent (Gurprasad).

For Raag Aasaa

Aasaa's hope is childlike trust: never alone, never forgetting, never finally afraid. The mood is intimate and safe — a child in the shelter of a parent who is also Friend, Companion, and giver of peace.
