Raag Aasaa
Commentary

Raag Aasaa, Mehl 5 (Guru Arjan), Sixth House

Whatever pleases You is fine with me — for that alone is peace, that alone is wisdom; with Your support anxiety cannot gnaw, and dealing in the Name, we ourselves become true.

The Arc

Pauri 0: whatever pleases You is acceptable; You are the Doer, none other. The Pause (Pauri 1): the only wisdom is whatever You do. Pauri 2: the Name is Nectar, tasted in the Sangat, satisfying. Pauri 3: with Your support, no anxiety; touched by mercy, the most fortunate king. Pauri 4: doubt and deceit vanish at Your sight; dealing in the Name, we become true.

Key Vocabulary

  • "whatever pleases You": the Hukam accepted as peace itself (cf. B00C694, B00C745)
  • wisdom redefined: the only cleverness is recognizing the One's doing
  • no anxiety: worry dissolved by the One's support (the deep trust)
  • dealing in the Name: the business that makes the dealer true

Themes and Cross-Connections

This shabad is concentrated Hukam — "whatever pleases You is acceptable" plus the radical redefinition of wisdom as trusting the One's doing (against cleverness, B00C730). "No anxiety with Your support" is the deep trust of Raag Gauree ("sleep in peace"). "Dealing in the Name makes us true" is the merchant of the Name (B00C731) joined to Sach.

For Raag Aasaa

Aasaa's hope is the peace of total trust and the wisdom of surrender. The mood is settled and bright — anxiety gone, the soul made true by the company it keeps and the Name it deals in.
