Raag Aasaa
Commentary

Raag Aasaa, Mehl 5 (Guru Arjan)

Standing, sitting, sleeping, walking, working on the road — meditate everywhere; listen with your ears and the mind's troubles depart; the one who never forgets, all day long, is free.

The Arc

Pauri 0: meditate standing, sitting, sleeping, walking. The Pause (Pauri 1): listen to the Ambrosial Sermon, and the mind's troubles depart. Pauri 2: meditate even at work, on the road — drink the essence. Pauri 3: singing day and night, the soul escapes death. Pauri 4: the one who never forgets, all day, is free — Nanak bows to him.

Key Vocabulary

  • remembrance everywhere: no posture or moment excludes the Name (cf. Shabad 82, Shabad 121)
  • Suniai: deep listening that clears the mind's troubles
  • remembrance at work: the Name woven through the ordinary working day (Grihast)
  • unbroken remembrance: the soul of all-day Naam, worthy of reverence

Themes and Cross-Connections

This is one of Aasaa's strongest Grihast shabads — remembrance carried into work and the road, not confined to the temple (cf. Shabad 82, "every breath and morsel"). Listening as healing is Suniai (Japji). Singing kirtan day and night is said to free the devotee from the Messenger of Death; this can be compared cautiously with jeevat marnaa (Shabad 107).

For Raag Aasaa

Aasaa's hope goes to work with you: there is no ordinary moment the Name can't fill. The mood is practical and warm — devotion at the workbench and on the commute.
