Raag Aasaa
Commentary

Raag Aasaa, Mehl 5 (Guru Arjan)

When God is pleased with you, suffering and doubt cannot draw near; chanting the Mantra, anxiety is not just eased but forgotten — and for the one whose mind is filled with the Name, what is left to do?

The Arc

Pauri 0: with God pleased, how can suffering or doubt come near? The Pause (Pauri 1): I live by listening to Your glory — worthless, save me. Pauri 2: suffering ended, anxiety forgotten, by the Guru's Mantra. Pauri 3: He is real; keep Him clasped to your heart. Pauri 4: what action is left for one whose mind is filled with the Name?

Key Vocabulary

  • the pleased One as shelter: suffering and doubt cannot breach it
  • Suniai: living by listening to the One's glory
  • anxiety forgotten: not just eased but gone, as if never held
  • "what is left to do?": the Name as completeness, quieting the restless striving

Themes and Cross-Connections

"What action is left?" names the sufficiency of the Naam — when the mind is full, the restless striving quiets (cf. Shabad 111, "what hunger can I have?"). Living by Suniai recurs from Japji. "He is real" is Sach; the pleased One as shelter is Gurprasad and Hukam.

For Raag Aasaa

Aasaa's hope is a fullness that quiets restless striving while still calling for listening and remembrance. The mood is settled and complete — anxiety forgotten, striving laid down.
