Raag Aasaa
Commentary

Raag Aasaa, Mehl 5 (Guru Arjan), Eleventh House

Like an actor in many costumes, the soul changes forms through countless lives and finds no peace; the three qualities are an unfathomable whirlpool crossed only by the Guru's Word — and the long search ends in the Name that satisfies the mind.

The Arc

Pauri 0: the actor in many disguises, the soul wandering without peace. The Pause (Pauri 1): without the One you perish; win the treasure of human life in the Sangat. Pauri 2: Maya of the three qualities is a whirlpool, crossed only by the Word. Pauri 3: after long searching, the Name satisfies the mind.

Key Vocabulary

  • the actor in disguises: changing forms with no rest (the cycle)
  • the treasure of human life: the birth to be won, not wasted (cf. B00C855)
  • the whirlpool of the three qualities: Maya you can't struggle out of (Trai Gun)
  • the search ended: the long quest resolved in the Name (cf. B00C803)

Themes and Cross-Connections

The whirlpool of the trai gun crossed only by the Shabad is a vivid image of the bhavjal. "Win the treasure of human life" is the prize of human life (B00C754). "Searching and searching... realized the essence" is the search ended of B00C803.

For Raag Aasaa

Aasaa's hope is rest after long wandering: the costume-changing soul, caught in the whirlpool, is carried across by the Word and satisfied by the Name. The mood is searching, then settled.
