Raag Aasaa
Commentary

Raag Aasaa, Bhagat Kabir Jee

The restless dance ends — the grasping mind's drum falls silent, the pot of desires bursts, and the heart comes to see all beings as equal.

The Arc

Kabir speaks from arrival: the long changing of forms is over; the instrument's strings are worn out; I rest in the Name (P0). The Pause: I no longer dance to the tune; my mind no longer beats the drum — freedom from the compulsive inner rhythm (P1). The emptying: lust, anger, attachment burnt; the pitcher of desires burst; the gown of pleasures worn out; doubts gone (P2). The fruit: I look upon all beings alike, and conflict is ended — grace gave the Perfect One (P3).

Key Vocabulary

  • The worn-out instrument / no more dancing (P0–1) — the frantic music of the grasping ego played out; stillness at last.
  • The pitcher of desires bursts (P2) — the endlessly-demanding cravings emptied out; relief and clarity.
  • "I look upon all beings alike" (P3) — equal vision (sam drisat): the quiet heart's kindness; conflict ended.
  • When the Lord showed favor (P3) — the whole transformation credited to grace.

Translation Notes

  • "Burnt lust, anger, attachment" (P2). The five passions; rendered as "grabbing, anger, endless wanting" per the raag's usage.
  • The dance/drum images. Rendered as the compulsive inner rhythm of the grasping mind going quiet — the shabad's thrust.

Themes and Cross-Connections

The ego's "show/dance falling silent" rhymes with Kabir's own B00C980 (the noisy show goes quiet). "I look upon all beings alike" is the raag's equal-vision peak (Nanak's "Light in all" B00C662, sam drisat B00C945, the golden rule B00C986). The emptied pitcher connects to Kabir's recurring clay-vessel images (B00C970, B00C985). Freedom-from-rebirth by grace is the raag's constant close.

For Raag Aasaa

Kabir gives a child a beautiful picture of inner freedom: so much of our restlessness is dancing to a frantic drum inside us — reacting, chasing, never still. When that drum goes quiet and the pot of endless wanting empties out, two wonderful things happen: a deep peace, and a new way of seeing — every being looked upon as equal, and the old need to fight simply gone. The quiet heart shows up in the world as kindness and equal regard. And it all comes, in the end, as grace.
