Raag Aasaa
Commentary

Raag Aasaa, Mehl 4 (Guru Ram Das)

Let your dancing be meditation and your company the holy; meditate until hunger never returns — for praise of the One never satiates yet always deepens peace, and its customers carry virtue home.

The Arc

Pauri 0: join the Sat Sangat, and the jewel of wisdom lights the heart. The Pause (Pauri 1): let your dancing be meditation; I would wash the Saints' feet. Pauri 2: meditate and never feel hunger again. Pauri 3: the One speaks through us, and the Saints' honor is approved by the Will. Pauri 4: praise never satiates yet deepens peace, and devotees buy virtues to carry home.

Key Vocabulary

  • Sat Sangat: the true company where the jewel of wisdom is caught (philosophy.md)
  • "let your dancing be meditation": the inner dance (cf. B00C665, B00C709)
  • "never feel hunger again": the restless wanting stilled at the center
  • the customers of virtue: devotees trading in the one market that enriches (B00C699)

Themes and Cross-Connections

"Let your dancing be meditation" places this shabad firmly in The Inward Turn alongside B00C665 and B00C709. The jewel of wisdom and the Saints' feet are Sat Sangat. "Never feel hunger again" answers the holy hunger of B00C718 and B00C661 with fullness. The closing paradox — praise that never satiates yet deepens peace — and the merchant of virtue (gun) tie to B00C699 and B00C721's own customers-of-virtue.

For Raag Aasaa

Aasaa's hope here is a fullness that never cloys: a praise you never tire of, a hunger finally stilled, a company that lifts you. The mood is glad and companionable, ending in the sweet paradox of an appetite that grows more peaceful the more it is fed.
