Verse 3 of 5

You Take the Color of What You Love, So Choose Love

ਰਾਂਗਨਿ ਰਾਂਗਉ ਸੀਵਨਿ ਸੀਵਉ ॥
raaNgan raaNga-o seevan seeva-o.
I dye myself in the color of the Lord, and sew what has to be sewn.
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਘਰੀਅ ਨ ਜੀਵਉ ॥੨॥
raam naam bin gharee-a na jeeva-o. ||2||
Without the Lord's Name, I cannot live, even for a moment. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I soak my whole self in the color of the One's love, and stitch together the life I'm meant to live.

Without the Name in my heart, I couldn't last even a moment.

You take on the 'color' of what you love, and stitch your life together from your choices — so choose love.
The deeper layer

Naam Dayv continues his tailoring imagery beautifully: I dye myself in the color of the Lord (soaking his whole being in the deep dye of love — the Rang the raag loves), and I sew what has to be sewn — stitching together a good life the way a tailor stitches cloth. His craft becomes his devotion at every step: dyeing, sewing, measuring, cutting. And the depth of his love: without the Lord's Name, I cannot live even for a moment — the One is as necessary to him as breath. For a child, the image is warm and vivid: you 'dye' yourself in what you love (you take on its color), and you 'sew together' your life out of your choices. Naam Dayv sews his out of love for the One, and can't imagine living any other way.

A Question to Sit With

If you 'took on the color' of what you love most, what color would you be?
