Even Your Gifts Become a Trap With Pride

ਸੋਹਨੀ ਸਰੂਪਿ ਸੁਜਾਣਿ ਬਿਚਖਨਿ ॥

O beautiful, attractive, wise and clever woman:

you have been trapped by your pride and attachment. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

O lovely, charming, wise and clever one:

you have been trapped by your own pride and clinging.

Even your gifts can become a trap when pride and clinging get hold of them.
The deeper layer

This is the "pause" line, the rahaa-o — the center of the shabad. It names the trap exactly.

Sohnee saroop sujaan bichkhan — beautiful, lovely, wise and clever. These are real gifts. But at garbai mohi faakee — you have been caught by great pride and by clinging. Clinging means holding on too tight to people and things. The very gifts that should help the soul have trapped it.

It is like a gifted player who stops passing the ball. The talent is still there, but now it works against the team. Talent without humility is not a treasure. It becomes a cage.

A Question to Sit With

How can a strength — like being clever or charming — sometimes become a trap?
