In plain words

The soul on whom the One casts its Glance of Grace is set free from all of it.

Joining the company of the holy, it gains the sweet essence of the One.

Says Nanak: how fruitful, then, is that life.

What no advantage could give you, grace can — and a life touched by it is finally fruitful.
The deeper layer

Here the shabad turns from the problem to the cure. What no advantage could give, grace gives.

Jaa ka-o darisat ma-i-aa har raa-ay — the one on whom the One, the King, looks with kindness. That soul bandee tay la-ee chhadaa-ay — is set free from its chains. Status, money and manners could not unlock them. One kind look does.

Then comes the saaDhsang, the company of the holy. There the soul finds har ras, the sweet taste of the One. Kaho naanak safal oh kaa-i-aa — says Nanak, that body, that life, bears fruit. Think of a plant that finally gets sunlight after sitting in a dark corner. Only then does it truly grow.

A Question to Sit With

What is the difference between a successful life and a truly fruitful one?
