Verse 5 of 6

Restless Wandering Gets Nowhere; Steadiness Gets You Home

ਭ੍ਰਮਤ ਫਿਰੇ ਤਿਨ ਕਿਛੂ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
bharmat firay tin kichhoo na paa-i-aa.
Those who continue to wander around, achieve nothing.
ਸੇ ਅਸਥਿਰ ਜਿਨ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੁ ਕਮਾਇਆ ॥੪॥
say asthir jin gur sabad kamaa-i-aa. ||4||
Those who practice the Guru's Teachings, become steady and stable. ||4||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Those who keep wandering get nowhere.

Those who live by the Guru's teaching grow steady and firm.

Restless wandering gets nowhere; steadiness rooted in the teaching gets you home.
The deeper layer

The contrast of wandering and steadiness: restless seeking "achieves nothing," while practicing the Guru's teaching makes one "steady and stable." Stillness rooted in the teaching accomplishes what restless motion never can.

A Question to Sit With

When has staying steady accomplished more than rushing around?
