Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Says Nanak: when the Guru is fully pleased, you meet the One, the King.

Then the night of your life passes in peace and natural ease.

Met by the One, the long night of life passes gently, in natural ease.
The deeper layer

This one is about the peace that comes when you meet the One.

Gur naanak tuthaa mili-aa har raa-ay — says Nanak, when the Guru is fully pleased, you meet the One, the King.

Sukh rain vihaanee sahj subhaa-ay — then the night of life passes in peace. Sahj means natural ease, a calm that comes on its own.

In an earlier shabad, life's night felt endless because the soul was longing for the One. Here the same night passes gently. Think of a long car ride at night. It feels endless when you are worried. With someone you love beside you, you sleep peacefully and wake up home.

A Question to Sit With

What helps a hard stretch of time pass more gently for you?
