In plain words

Says Nanak: keep singing the praises of the One,

and your face will shine, your mind grow spotless.

Praise keeps you awake, lights your face, and clears your mind.
The deeper layer

This one says singing the One's praise keeps you awake inside and makes your face shine.

Kaho naanak gun gaa-ee-ah neet means "says Nanak, sing the One's goodness every day." Neet means always, day after day.

What happens then? Mukh oojal hoay means "your face becomes bright." Nirmal cheet means "your mind becomes clean and clear."

Think of how someone looks after singing their favorite song with friends. Their eyes light up. They look lighter. Praise does that on the inside too. This is how the rare few from the last line stay awake. Singing the One's praises lights up the face and washes the mind clean.

A Question to Sit With

What practice leaves you visibly lighter and clearer?
