Sikhism·Raag Aasaa·Shabad 112
Verse 3 of 5

When the Highest Keeps Your Honor, Fear No Lesser Power

ਤੇਰੇ ਦਾਸਰੇ ਕਉ ਕਿਸ ਕੀ ਕਾਣਿ ॥
tayray daasray ka-o kis kee kaan.
Unto whom does Your servant pay homage?
ਜਿਸ ਕੀ ਮੀਰਾ ਰਾਖੈ ਆਣਿ ॥੨॥
jis kee meeraa raakhai aan. ||2||
His King preserves his honor. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

To whom should His servant bow in fear?

His King keeps his honor.

When the highest One keeps your honor, there's no lesser power to fear.
The deeper layer

When the One is on your side, you do not need to bow in fear to anyone else.

Tayray daasray ka-o kis kee kaan — why would Your servant bow to anyone out of fear? Jis kee meeraa raakhai aan — the servant's King keeps his honor safe.

It is like a new kid at school who knows the principal is looking out for them. They do not have to shrink in front of the loudest kid in the hall. Another Aasaa shabad says the same thing: fearlessness comes from knowing the One is the one who acts.

A Question to Sit With

What might you stop being afraid of if you knew you were truly backed?
