Verse 3 of 5

Don't Live on His Gifts While Serving Something Else

ਵਜਹੁ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਕਾ ਸੇਵ ਬਿਰਾਨੀ ॥
vajahu saahib kaa sayv biraanee.
He takes his wages from his Lord and Master, but he serves another.
ਐਸੇ ਗੁਨਹ ਅਛਾਦਿਓ ਪ੍ਰਾਨੀ ॥੨॥
aisay gunah achhaadi-o paraanee. ||2||
With such sins, the mortal is engrossed. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

He takes his wages from his Master, yet serves someone else entirely.

In such wrongs the person is absorbed.

It makes no sense to live on the One's gifts while serving something else entirely.
The deeper layer

A sharp image of misplaced loyalty: "he takes his wages from his Lord and Master, but he serves another." Everything we have is the One's gift (our "wages"), yet we spend our service on Maya. The contradiction is the very substance of the wrong we live in.

A Question to Sit With

Whose 'wages' are you living on — and what are you actually serving with your days?
