In plain words

These are the teachings I received from the Guru.

I was drowning in the pitch-black well, and I was saved, brothers and sisters.

Sometimes you are not just lost but going under — and the right teaching pulls you out.
The deeper layer

This line is about being saved just in time.

It is the Rahao, the "pause" line. It is the center of the shabad. Boodat ghor anDh koop meh niksi-o — I was drowning in a pitch-black well, and I was pulled out. The picture is strong on purpose. The soul was not just a little lost. It was going under, in the dark.

Imagine a swimmer who is too tired to keep their head up. They do not need a speech about swimming. They need a hand. The Guru's teaching was that hand. Being saved here does not feel like a prize you won. It feels like being lifted out of the water when you could not lift yourself.

A Question to Sit With

When have you been pulled out of something dark just in time?
