You Can't Swim a Sea of Fire; Board the Boat

mahaa agaah agan kaa saagar. gur bohith taaray ratnaagar. ||2||
The Guru is the boat to cross over the totally unfathomable ocean of fire; He is treasure of jewels. ||2||

In plain words

The Guru is the boat that carries me across the ocean of fire, too deep to measure.

The Guru is the treasure of jewels.

You can't swim across a sea of fire — you have to board the boat.
The deeper layer

Some things are too big to cross alone, and the Guru is the boat.

Here the world is pictured as agan kaa saagar, an ocean of fire. Life can feel like that: hot, rough and hard to get through. Nobody can swim across a sea of fire. You would not even try. You would look for a boat.

Gur bohith — the Guru is the boat. And the Guru is also ratnaagar, a treasure of jewels. So the Guru does two things. The Guru carries you safely across. And the Guru is the riches you find when you get there. It is like a ride home that is also the gift waiting for you at home.

A Question to Sit With

What 'boat' have you needed to get across something you couldn't manage alone?
