This ocean of illusion is dark and treacherous.
The perfect Guru has shown the way across it.
The way through life can be dark, but there is a way.
Maa-i-aa (Maya) means the pull of the world, all the things that grab us and fool us. This line calls it a dark and tricky ocean. It is easy to get lost in, and hard to steer through. The shabad is honest about that.
But it does not stop there. Gur poorai pargat maarag dikhaa-i-aa — the perfect Guru has shown the way. Think of driving at night in fog. You cannot see much. Then the headlights catch the lines on the road, and you know where to go. The danger is real, and so is the path through it. The shabad holds both, without giving up hope.
