Sikhism·Raag Aasaa·Shabad 117
Verse 5 of 5

With No Powers to Rely On, Refuge Is Enough

ਜਾਪ ਤਾਪ ਕਛੁ ਉਕਤਿ ਨ ਮੋਰੀ ॥
jaap taap kachh ukat na moree.
I do not have the ability to chant or practice intense meditation.
ਗੁਰ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਰਣਾਗਤਿ ਤੋਰੀ ॥੪॥੨੬॥
gur naanak sarnaagat toree. ||4||26||
Guru Nanak seeks Your Sanctuary. ||4||26||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I have no power to chant or to sit in deep meditation.

Nanak simply seeks Your shelter.

When you have no great powers to rely on, refuge itself is enough.
The deeper layer

You do not need to be impressive to be welcome. Asking for shelter is enough.

Jaap taap kachh ukat na moree — I do not have the skill to chant or to do hard meditation. Guru Arjan speaks as someone with nothing grand to show. No special powers. No big achievements.

And still he says, gur naanak sarnaagat toree — Nanak comes into Your shelter. Think of a little child running to a parent in a storm. The child does not bring a report card first. The child just runs in, and the door opens. When no practice of our own can carry us, the boat is shelter, not skill.

A Question to Sit With

What is it like to ask for shelter when you have nothing impressive to offer?
