Taste the Real and the Substitutes Lose Their Hold

ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਪੀਵੈ ਅਲਮਸਤੁ ਮਤਵਾਰਾ ॥

One who drinks in the Lord's sublime essence, is intoxicated and enraptured;

all other essences have no effect. ||1||Pause||

In plain words

One who drinks the One's deep essence is swept up and carried away.

No other flavor has any hold on them.

Once you've truly tasted the real thing, the cheap substitutes lose their hold.
The deeper layer

This one says that once you taste the real thing, the substitutes lose their hold on you.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. Har ras peevai almasat matvaaraa means "whoever drinks the One's taste is filled with joy, carried away." Aan rasaa sabh hochhay means "all other tastes are shallow."

Think of a kid who has had fresh mango, picked ripe from the tree. After that, mango candy just tastes fake. Nobody has to tell them to stop wanting it. The real taste did the work.

The same happens in the heart. Once you have tasted the joy of being close to the One, the cheap thrills of the world loosen their grip on their own. An earlier shabad says something similar about the world's cheap drink losing its pull.

A Question to Sit With

What good thing, once you found it, made a lesser thing stop tempting you?
