The Hour We Don't Want Comes Anyway

ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥

Aasaa, Fifth Mehl:
ਬਾਂਛਤ ਨਾਹੀ ਸੁ ਬੇਲਾ ਆਈ ॥

That time, which the mortal does not wish for, eventually comes.
ਬਿਨੁ ਹੁਕਮੈ ਕਿਉ ਬੁਝੈ ਬੁਝਾਈ ॥੧॥
bin hukmai ki-o bujhai bujhaa-ee. ||1||
Without the Lord's Command, how can understanding be understood? ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The hour no one wishes for comes, in the end, all the same.

And without the One's Command, how could anyone ever truly understand?

The hour we don't want comes anyway — and even understanding it is something granted, not grasped.
The deeper layer

Death — "that time, which the mortal does not wish for" — comes regardless of our wishes. And real understanding (of death, of the soul) does not arise on its own: "without the Lord's Command, how can understanding be understood?" Even insight into mortality is given by the Hukam.

A Question to Sit With

What hard truth have you come to understand only when you were ready for it?
