The Soul Was Never Young and Never Grows Old

ਠੰਢੀ ਤਾਤੀ ਮਿਟੀ ਖਾਈ ॥

The body is consumed by water, fire and earth.
ਓਹੁ ਨ ਬਾਲਾ ਬੂਢਾ ਭਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
oh na baalaa boodhaa bhaa-ee. ||1|| rahaa-o.
But the soul is neither young nor old, O Siblings of Destiny. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The body is taken back by water, fire, and earth.

But the soul itself is neither young nor old.

Your body ages and returns to the elements — but the soul itself was never young and never grows old.
The deeper layer

The Pause draws the great distinction: the body returns to the elements — "water, fire and earth" — but the soul "is neither young nor old." The soul does not age and does not die with the body; it is of a different order entirely. What returns to dust was never the real you.

A Question to Sit With

What part of you feels unchanged, even as your body changes over the years?
