Why Give Your Heart to What Departs?

ਕਾਹੇ ਏਕ ਬਿਨਾ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਈਐ ॥
kaahay ayk binaa chit laa-ee-ai.
Why center your consciousness on any other than the Lord?

Sitting down, standing up, sleeping and waking, forever and ever, meditate on the Lord. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Why fix your heart on anything other than the One?

Sitting, standing, sleeping, waking — forever, remember the One.

Why give your heart to what departs? — give it to the One thing that stays.
The deeper layer

This is the pause line, the Rahao, the center of the shabad. It asks: why give your heart to anything that leaves?

Kaahay ayk binaa chit laa-ee-ai — why fix your mind on anything but the One? Everything else gets left behind. So remember the One all the time. Oothat baithat sovat jaagat — standing up, sitting down, sleeping, waking. Remembering can fill every moment of life. Another shabad in Raag Aasaa says the same.

Think of your best friend. You do not think of them only at one set time. They come to mind while you eat, play, and fall asleep. The only one worth giving your whole heart to is the One who never leaves.

A Question to Sit With

Where is your heart most fixed right now, and will it last?
