Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The whole world is asleep in doubt, blinded by its tangles.

How rare is the servant of the One who is awake and aware.

Almost everyone sleeps through their life — rare and precious is the one who is truly awake.
The deeper layer

Most people sleep through their lives, and the one who is truly awake is rare.

"The whole world is asleep in doubt," the verse says, "blinded by worldly entanglements." That kind of sleep means going through the motions. Eyes open, but not really seeing.

Think of scrolling on a phone for an hour and then not remembering a thing you saw. That is how a whole life can pass. "How rare is that humble servant of the Lord who is awake and aware." Being truly awake is rare and precious. Another Aasaa shabad speaks of this same sleep.

A Question to Sit With

What does it mean to be truly awake to your own life rather than sleepwalking through it?
