Verse 2 of 4

Illusion Can Feel Dearer Than Life Itself

ਮਹਾ ਮੋਹਨੀ ਮਗਨ ਪ੍ਰਿਅ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ॥
mahaa mohnee magan pari-a pareet paraan.
The mortal is intoxicated with the great enticement of Maya, which is dearer to him than life.
ਕੋਊ ਤਿਆਗੈ ਵਿਰਲਾ ॥੨॥
ko-oo ti-aagai virlaa. ||2||
How rare is the one who renounces it. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

People are drunk on the great lure of illusion — dearer to them than life itself.

How rare is the one who lets it go.

The lure of illusion can feel dearer than life itself — which is why letting go is so rare.
The deeper layer

The lure of Maya, the world's shiny pull, can feel dearer than life itself.

The verse shows how strong its grip is. People are drunk on "the great enticement of Maya." It is "dearer to him than life." People will give up almost anything, even their lives, to chase it.

Think of a kid who will not let go of a toy even while falling off the swing. The grip is that tight. So letting go is rare, because the clinging runs deeper than the wish to live. "How rare is the one who renounces it."

A Question to Sit With

What do people cling to so hard they'd risk almost anything for it?
