Verse 3 of 4

The Most Beautiful Is Free; Rare Is the Soul That Holds It

ਚਰਨ ਕਮਲ ਆਨੂਪ ਹਰਿ ਸੰਤ ਮੰਤ ॥
charan kamal aanoop har sant mant.
The Lord's Lotus Feet are incomparably beautiful; so is the Mantra of the Saint.
ਕੋਊ ਲਾਗੈ ਸਾਧੂ ॥੩॥
ko-oo laagai saaDhoo. ||3||
How rare is that holy person who is attached to them. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The Lotus Feet of the One are beautiful beyond compare, and so is the Saint's sacred word.

How rare is the holy soul who clings to them.

The most beautiful thing is freely offered — the rare part is a soul that actually holds to it.
The deeper layer

The most beautiful thing is offered freely. What is rare is a soul that holds on to it.

Now the verse turns to what is good. The One's "Lotus Feet" are "incomparably beautiful." Lotus Feet means the One's gentle, loving presence. So is "the Mantra of the Saint," the holy one's sacred word.

Yet even holding on to these is rare. "How rare is that holy person who is attached to them." Think of a free library full of wonderful books, while most people walk right past. The beauty is right there for anyone. The rare part is the soul that clings to it, instead of to the shiny lure.

A Question to Sit With

Why do you think people often cling to what harms them and let go of what helps?
