What Wakes the Rare Few Is Company and Grace

the Lord's Mercy is bestowed upon those who are blessed with such good destiny. ||4||1||39||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Says Nanak: in the company of the holy, the love of true knowing wakes up.

And the One's mercy falls on those blessed with such good fortune.

What wakes the rare few isn't willpower — it's good company and grace.
The deeper layer

What wakes up the rare few is good company and grace.

The answer is the Saadh Sangat, the company of the holy. There "the love of divine knowledge is awakened." Being awake is not something we make all by ourselves. It is lit in company.

Think of a sleepy morning when a friend knocks and says, "Come on, let's go!" Their energy wakes you up. Then the One's mercy crowns it. It comes to "those blessed with such good destiny." Company and grace together rouse the sleeper.

A Question to Sit With

Whose company has woken you up to something you'd been asleep to?
