This world is a great wilderness, an ocean of fire, in which mortals abide, in pleasure and pain.

Meeting with the True Guru, the mortal becomes immaculately pure; with his tongue, he chants the Ambrosial Name of the Lord. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

This world is a vast wilderness, an ocean of fire, where people live in pleasure and pain.

Meeting the true Guru, a person becomes spotless and chants the Ambrosial Name.

The world can be a trackless wilderness — the Guru is the guide who knows the way.
The deeper layer

The world is "a great wilderness, an ocean of fire" — trackless and dangerous, where souls swing between "pleasure and pain." The way through is the Guru, who makes the soul "immaculately pure." The wilderness has no map of its own; the Guru is the guide.
