Verse 3 of 6

The Soul's Fortune Is the Beloved Living Within

ਤੁਮ ਹੀ ਸੁੰਦਰਿ ਤੁਮਹਿ ਸੁਹਾਗੁ ॥
tum hee sundar tumeh suhaag.
You are so beautiful; you are the happy soul-bride.
ਤੁਮ ਘਰਿ ਲਾਲਨੁ ਤੁਮ ਘਰਿ ਭਾਗੁ ॥੨॥
tum ghar laalan tum ghar bhaag. ||2||
Your Beloved is in your home; good fortune is in your home. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

You are so beautiful — you are the happy bride.

Your Beloved is in your home; good fortune fills your house.

The soul's good fortune isn't its ornaments — it's the Beloved living within.
The deeper layer

The bride is named suhaagan, the happy bride, and the reason for her beauty is named: "your Beloved is in your home." Her good fortune is not in her ornaments but in the presence — the Beloved dwelling within. Beauty follows presence (cf. Shabad 71).

A Question to Sit With

What truly makes a home (or a heart) feel fortunate?
